HOJIBLANCA

The Hojiblanca olive tree is a subtropical Mediterranean evergreen native to the Spanish Andalusia region.

Many of the Hojiblanca’s captivating visual traits are also what makes it remarkably versatile, resilient and self-reliant.

The tree’s fruit produces what is considered a premium varietal olive oil; yet the Hojiblanca can live for as long as 1000 years.

Its name hojibanca means “white-leaved” in Spanish, because it has two-tone leaves with white undersides and darker tops. The resulting high photosynthesis efficiency allows it to thrive in full-sunlight or moderately-shaded settings, and its strong vigor means higher rate of mass production which creates its stunning trunk of dramatically knurled and twisted features.

Its canopy is of medium density and adapts to widely varying sunlight/shade ratios and temperature range. Because it doesn’t need direct sunlight, the Hojiblanca can be placed with other tree types for an arbor or shade stand, yet it is self-fertilizing making it non-dependent on insects or other plant species in order to flower.

Once mature, the Hojiblanca olive tree requires minimal watering or care.

PIEL JOVEN HOJIBLANCA

The Piel Joven Hojiblanca is an excellent entry point tree for anyone just starting out on their olive tree journey.

Ranging in age from 20 to 40 years old, the smaller size and easy-care make the Piel Joven Hojiblanca suitable for smaller or even indoor spaces, and have a lifespan measured in centuries.

HAUSCA

The Spanish Hausca olive tree is a fast-growing, long-lived tree that can reach heights of up to 20 feet.

It is also very hardy and can withstand extreme temperatures and drought conditions.

The tree has an open, airy canopy that provides shade and helps to prevent soil erosion.

The leaves of the tree are a glossy dark green and have a pleasant, mild scent.

The bark of the tree is a dark grayish-brown and is used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

SYLVESTRIS

One of the tree’s most striking features is the twisted trunk that becomes more “stylishly deformed” with age.

Another element of the tree’s overall visual presence are its distinctive leaves, designated as “lanceolate”, or having a shape similar to a lance (medieval battle pole).

The 1 to 1½-inch leaves have a leathery texture, gracefully tapering at each end. While the top is dark green in color, the leaf’s underside is a noticeably lighter shade, creating a pleasant “flickering” effect when breezes pass through.

Interestingly, this two-toned leaf-color motif of the wild Sylvestris is shared by its high-class cultivated cousin, the Hojiblanca.

The process of carefully up-rooting and transplanting a mature olive tree to its new home requires a moderate amount of care and maintenance, but no more than any other cherished and valued ornamental tree.

It is important to understand that your newly transplanted olive tree might experience a shock period in response to its new living environment, which can disrupt the development of a strong root system.

This is why some care and planning during this important first year is required. Placement is critical, as your new tree will need sufficiently fertile soil, constant sun exposure and proper draining for weekly deep-watering, while the monthly application of high-nitrogen fertilizer and wind protection should be part of your nurture routine.

And you may bond with your beloved tree with an occasional pruning to promote flowering.
