After centuries of contribution to ancient societies and modern lifestyles as a staple food source, medicinal element and source of wealth and power, the olive tree has finally gotten its day in the sun: November 26th is World Olive Tree Day, as proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This legendary tree is now paid its due tribute with a day when we offer a global tip of the hat on behalf of all of those throughout history whom it has fed with its fruit, cured with its leaves and inspired with its beauty.
Let’s All Gather Round The Olive Tree:
UNESCO Officially Recognizes
a Living-Heritage Treasure
If you’ve ever savored those little black rings that often adorn a pizza, or enjoyed munching a little egg-shaped garnish at the bottom of your Martini, then it could be argued that you owe a debt of gratitude to nature’s leafy food source — the olive tree. Originally a native of the Mediterranean region, the olive tree’s influence has reached well-beyond its homeland to become a true botanical citizen of the world.
UNESCO Plants the Olive Tree into World Tribute Day Calendar
To pay tribute to this widely-revered plant, a respected world body has granted a request to officially recognize the olive tree in a gesture that gives the Mediterranean evergreen its very own spot on the international calendar of “honor” days:
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognized November 26th as World Olive Tree Day.
The unanimous decision by the world body’s executive committee to adopt the measure took place on that date in 2019 during the world body’s 206th session.
The proposal’s two main backers, UNESCO Executive Committee member states Lebanon and Tunisia, According to the IOC, aim to “…protect the olive tree and promote the values of peace, wisdom and harmony that it symbolises.”
The world celebration-day is an international thank you to the olive tree for the many and varied contributions it has generously and reliably provided throughout history.
A Rich Heritage Spanning Centuries
Since ancient times, olive trees have been revered for their natural resilience and longevity, and prized for their fruit and extract that are made into table olives and olive oil. So valuable was olive oil in those times as a staple food that it was often used as currency or collateral for loans. Because of this influence, over the years the olive tree came to represent power, wealth as well as renewal and endurance.
Modern Role as Marquee-Attraction Gardening Superstar
Today, olives and olive oil remain popular for snacking and cooking, respectively, but there is another facet that has gained popularity: Olive trees of all ages are now prized for their botanical high-performance and mesmerizing good-looks as ornamental elements in luxury landscaping.
Home-landscapers and commercial designers alike world-wide are using Mediterranean olive trees to enhance personal living spaces and public areas with their rustic elegance, aesthetic charm and drought-tolerance.
With over 800 varieties bearing exotic names like Hausca, Molteno, Farga, Hoijiblanca and Piel Joven, the ornamental olive tree has come to represent the apex of prestige and environmental consciousness in the world of high-end landscaping. Olive trees can even be grown in pots as natural interior-scaping highlights.
With all its positive attributes and contributions to history, culinary matters and now the landscaping world, it’s about time that the Olea europaea (the olive tree’s scientific name) is honored every November 26th as a living legacy of human experience and a masterpiece of nature.
Gas Eating Environmental Protector
As a topic of great world-wide importance that has dominated the news for years, global warming is a problem that man-made solutions have failed to stop. But olive trees – with their dense wood and centuries-long lifespan – capture a high amount of atmospheric CO2 and traps it away within its branches and trunk. All trees perform this crucial task, but olive trees are particularly well-suited for the increasingly severe problem of airborne pollution.
November 26th is World Olive Tree Day… How Can I Take Part?
As the popularity of Thailand’s growing olive tree owner’s community can attest, purchasing one of these hardy and diversely beautiful Mediterranean evergreens is a lifelong partnership of prestige and stylishness, one that makes you a part of your tree’s generations-long lifetime.
Since there is already a strong worldwide precedent for celebrating a holiday through the purchase and enjoyment of a particular type of tree, why not become part of an evolution of tree-centric global tribute days?
And while you’re deciding, think about this…
The more-established of the tree-holidays (hint: ho, ho, ho!) requires the purchase and killing of a healthy, oxygen-producing plant for the benefit of a two-week nostalgia fest that ends with the poor tree in the trash or burned up like garden trimmings.
Buying an olive tree does just the opposite: It lasts for generations, is environmentally protective and celebrates a gift of nature that all cultures can, and do, enjoy.
